Brief Exposé About Ogbaru

Ogbaru, a local government area sitting pretty on Latitude: 5.9213° N and Longitude: 6.7280° E with the Niger river adorning it on the right side due North of the cartesian plane. This awesome area is part of Anambra North Senatorial District, Nigeria.

Location:

Ogbaru is located along the side of the River Niger, stretching from Onitsha down to Ogwu Ikpele and extending into the hinterlands. It is bounded on the north by Onitsha South Local Government Area, Idemili North, Ekwusigo and Ihiala Local Government Areas on the east, Oguta in Imo State and Ase in Rivers State on the South, while the western side is the River Niger. Prior to its creation as a full Local Government in the early 1980’s, Ogbaru was an appendage of Onitsha Local Government at that time, as a District.

Headquaters:

Atani is the Headquarters of the Local Government.

Population:

Ogbaru has an estimated population of about a million people.

Occupation:

Main occupation of the people includes farming, fishing and hunting. Others are public service, trading and manufacturing. Due to its location near the River Niger (with rich natural Alluvial soil), Ogbaru has comparative advantage over many other Local Governments in the area of farming and Agricultural production. It is more or less, the Food basket of Anambra State.

Natural Resources:

Ogbaru is enriched with large amount of vegetation in the forest. These include fishing pools providing fish and other aquatic animals, palm trees for oil palm production and by products, other trees for commercial use. Above all, Ogbaru has large deposits of crude oil with exploration presently going on within Ossomari Forest Reserve, thereby generating 13% Derivation to Anambra State revenue.

Culture:

The cultural heritage of Ogbaru can be described as richly embedded in hospitality and a whole attitude of caring and sharing. Their mode of dressing and dancing easily identifies them wherever they are. Typically, a single glass can be used in sharing wine from one bottle to a group of people, with one person drinking after the other, without any fear whatsoever.

Politics:

Within the past few years, Ogbaru has produced eminent politicians who represented the Local Government at various levels including the Senate, the House of Representatives and the House of Assembly. Worthy of note is that the present Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Sir Somtochukwu Nkem Udeze is from Atani in Ogbaru Local Government and his people are very proud of him.
